Magill On Monday - contributed by Daniel Magill
Hasn't it been interesting this week to hear all the so called 'experts'
merrily jumping aboard the proverbial bandwagon, and criticising Peter
Taylor's decision to pick England's most promising youngsters on Wednesday
night. It's bad enough that the likes of Graeme Souness can't wait to have a
go at Peter's team selection, but when Terry "I'm not bitter at all" Venables
comes out with such offensive drivel, you would forgive Peter for telling
poor old Tel where he can stick his dole cheque!
Firstly, there are the suggestions that the likes of Rio Ferdinand would
benefit far more if he were able to play along side the internationally
experienced Martin Keown or Tony Adams. Experienced in what? Getting
England's World Cup qualifying campaign off to an abysmal start? Losing
against the Germans? Losing against the Romanians? Losing?
No, if England's young lions need to do any learning on Wednesday night,
they would be far better off learning it from the Italians, even if they are
on the wrong end of a battering. Of course, they won't be, they'll have far
too much pride and passion for that to happen. How refreshing!
Apparently the senior members of the England team were quite disgusted to
hear that they had been left out of the squad and couldn't believe that
Taylor had not bothered to tell them until just before the squad was
announced. Well boo hoo! You wouldn't see so many dummies being spat out at a
MotherCare closing down sale.
And who's supposed to be the youngsters here?
Martin Keown is the worst of the lot. Not only does he express his deep
dissatisfaction at not being selected for England, he has the nerve to stand
in front of the Match Of The Day cameras and blame not only a draining
European trip, but also a funeral, for his sides dismal performance on
Saturday. You obviously can't take the pace Martin, take the week off.
So to the final, and most ludicrous of all, criticism to be laid at the door
of Peter Taylor:
"What is the point in Taylor taking these youngsters when they won't be
involved in Sven's England squad?"
Fair point, badly made.
Yes it may seem a little futile to take these youngsters if they're not going
to be taken again, but whose fault is that? Certainly not Taylor's, because
you could bet your house he'd be taking them again if he had the chance. No,
yet again we can lay the blame firmly at the door of the FA, who have seen
fit to give Taylor complete control….but only for one game. He's even being
blamed for not contacting Swedish Sven to ask for permission to field a young
English team!
Speaking of Sven, did anyone see the weekend reports that his heritage can
actually be traced back to Scotland? Apparently an ancestor of Svens, John
Maclean, moved from Scotland to Gothenburg in the seventeenth century. Isn't
it funny how Scotland seem to be able to lay claim to almost anybody? I
suppose there's hope yet. Craig Brown's after someone to bolster his forward
line isn't he?
